Swim to Survive Visit #1 of 3 was a splash of a success yesterday! Students did a great job and enjoy the experience! Excellent job of remembering to bring a plastic bag, towel and suit!
Same time, same place next Thursday!
Math Tests:
Yesterday, Geometry and Spatial Sense Math tests were sent home to be reviewed and signed. Next unit will be Linear Measurement. More info to come on that this weekend.
Tonight, the Gr. 3 Social Studies end-of-the-unit test along with their specialized community research projects will be coming home. The final mark for report cards is averaged out between these two tasks. I must say, that with the amount of conferencing I did during the research portion of this project with students in class, I was disappointed with the level of effort that students put into finding information for their presentations. I GAVE them the information pages on each community so no additional research was expected. They just had to read it carefully and extract the details to include in their presentation. It seems that many grade 3s were waiting for the answers to be given to them rather than actively finding it themselves. I've come to know my students well and expect that they put in 100% effort in all areas and this clearly wasn't the case. Hopefully, it was a learning experience for all! I'll make sure students get more practise with this in the next couple of months, that's all!
Next unit for Gr. 3 will be Science: Exploring Soil and Plants.
More to come soon!

SECRET QUESTION: What do 'adverbs' describe?
Friday, 29 April 2016
Wednesday, 27 April 2016
1. Roll into deep water
2. Tread water for 1 minute
3. Swim 50 metres
2. Tread water for 1 minute
3. Swim 50 metres
The final certificate will indicate one of two results:
- HAS achieved the Swim to Survive Standard (3 skills in a continuous sequence) or,
- Has not met the Swim to Survive Standard
Please send your child with a plastic bag (to put wet towel and bathing suit in after changing) and a large swimming towel (large enough to cover themselves with while changing). Students will be allowed to change at the lunch hour INTO their bathing suits if they choose so as to save time when arriving at the pool. I spoke to the grade 3s about respecting other students' privacy and their own in the change room and to change quickly and quietly so as not to waste any time. You may want to follow up with a conversation of your own tonight with your child.

I will attend the final Swim to Survive session to assist in assessing students as they perform the 3 skills.
It will be a lot of fun! Promise!

SECRET QUESTION: What is 4 x 5?
Sunday, 24 April 2016
Welcome to back!
This week, there will be no THRoW or Reading Response BECAUSE there will be plenty of reviewing needed instead. So, just to be clear, your child is expected to review Math (Gr. 2/3) and Social Studies (Gr. 3) as well as review for the upcoming WOW test and language quiz for this Friday.
Gr. 2s and 3s are preparing for a Math test on Wednesday and language quiz on Friday. Review blue math duo tang and yellow language duo tang. Also, make sure your child is practising his/her WOW words throughout the week.
Gr. 3s are also preparing for their end-of-the-unit Social Studies test on Living and Working in Ontario on Thursday. Please review for 20 minutes EVERY NIGHT to prepare for this test on Thursday. Students did not do their very best on our poster presentations, and as a result, need to bump up their marks by doing well on this unit test. Focus should be on...
- identifying what city, municipality, county, province, country and continent we live in
- be able to describe each of the 3 land regions in Ontario and give specific features of each
- identify which land region we live in
- identify key industries located in each land region
- match up major industries with the different communities we presented
- describe all 6 land uses and give examples of each
- be able to choose where they would like to live and explain WHY using information learned in this unit
That's enough for now,
Coach Wilson
