First Math Assessment

Dear Parents,

Monday night, your child will be bringing home his/her first math assessment/test of the year.  Students are given an overall level of achievement that is determined by questions that demonstrate each of the following criteria...

Thank you to Mrs. Beattie's colourful visual she so gratiously shared with me to share with you!

Levels are as follows...

  • R - means that a student has NOT achieved a passing grade.  It can be understood as a grade of below 49%.
  • Level 1 - means that a students has achieved the equivalent of a D or 50- 59%.  This is not a fail.  It reflects that the student has a LIMITED understanding of the skills/concepts taught.
  • Level 2 - means that a student has achieved the equivalent of a C or 60 - 69%.  This reflects that the student has SOME understanding of the skills/concepts taught.
  • Level 3 - means that a student has achieved the equivalent of a B or 70 - 89%.  This reflects that the student has a GOOD understanding of the skills/concepts taught.
  • Level 4 - means that the student has a THOROUGH understanding of the skills and concepts taught and has achieved the equivalent of an A or 90 - 100%.
Each Math test, I usually include skills/concepts taught from previous units as a review.  Please go over your child's test with him/her.  Some areas may need to be reviewed and revisited depending on overall achievement.  Please sign and return your child's math test.

Next we move on to Patterning and Algebra with a focus on number patterns and relating addition to multiplication.  We will be learning our multiplication facts to 7. We begin with learning the x 0 times tables, then x 1, then x 2 because we already know our doubles! Then x 5, and finally x 10 for this unit.

That's all for now, stay tuned
